Highlights

Three ways to hear every word

One tap says the word, one spells it letter by letter, one reads it inside a sentence. All 79 words have all three recordings.

12 categories of first words

Fruits, Vegetables, Animals, Colors, Shapes, Household Items, School Supplies, Family Members, Body Parts, Vehicles, Toys and Weather — 6 to 8 words each.

One word, one screen

A big illustration, the word underneath, and Previous / Next. Nothing to read to get started, and nothing to get lost in.

Illustrated, not photographed

Every object is drawn in the same warm, friendly style, so a page of fruit and a page of vehicles feel like one book.

A parental gate on settings

The settings screen is behind a gate a small child cannot pass, which is what the stores' kids categories require.

New words without an update

Words and categories live in a hosted database, so the vocabulary can grow without shipping a new build.

About

Little Learners is a first-words app for children who are just starting to read. Each word gets a screen of its own: a large illustration, the word spelled out underneath, and three sound buttons — one that says the word, one that spells it letter by letter, and one that reads it inside a short sentence. A child who cannot yet read the label can still work the whole app, because everything they need to hear is one tap away.

The vocabulary is deliberately small and finishable: 79 words across 12 categories — fruits, vegetables, animals, colours, shapes, school supplies, household things, family members, body parts, vehicles, toys and weather. Every one of the 79 has all three recordings, so no card is a dead end. Illustrations are drawn in a single warm style rather than pulled from stock photography, which keeps a page of animals and a page of vehicles feeling like the same book.

Words and categories are served from a hosted database, so the vocabulary can grow without a new release. Settings sit behind a parental gate, as the app stores' children's categories require. The app is free and ad-supported, with a banner that fades in after the screen has settled rather than covering the word a child is looking at.
